Thomas Cape was the second child of a family of three. His mother was widowed and she worked for the City of Racine in a clerical function. She struggled as best she could - but she always ensured that her children had the best education - therefore, all three children attended St Catherine's HS. Tom graduated in 1962 and attended UW-Racine Extension. He worked for the city during the summer performing statistical counting of traffic at various Racine intersections. His patience was "outstanding" - but maybe he missed a car or two - when a young co-ed may have driven her convertible past him!
He and a close friend, David Verheyen (Brian Verheyen's brother") transferred to the engineering program at UW-Madison, where they both graduated as "mechanical engineers". Tom began his career at Twin-Disc and was assigned a "research project" concerning a certain drive train assembly. After a period of 12-16 months, he was unable to complete his project successfully, and was worried that he might be terminated. Upon review by his supervisor, he was told that every engineer in the corporation had taken a "stab" at the problem - and nobody had succeeded. Tom was lauded for his devotion to the project and his professional analysis of the problem and possible solutions.
Tom will always be remembered as a devoted husband and father - and a good friend to all. During high school we played a lot of sand lot baseball near his house - unfortunately, I can't remember all the "sand lot" rules that we had to play by due to so many obstacles in the field.
He was survived by his wife, one son, an older sister and a younger brother - all who miss him.
